New Data Underscore Need to Shore Up Employer-Based Health Coverage
Census Bureau data released September 30 show that the number of Americans without health insurance increased sharply last year: 2.4 million joined the ranks of the uninsured, bringing the total to 43.6 million. The increase was due mainly to declining rates of employer-sponsored health coverage, the Census Bureau reported. Over the past two years, the number of uninsured has increased by 3.8 million-a precipitous decline in coverage of 10 percent.
